I love doing these types of drawings. I quite often site with my sketch pad in front of the TV and can knock one of these out in an evening. The hardest part is getting the pose right, which is normally done in pencil. Then all the detail is added using a ballpoint pen with all pencil marks erased once the ink is dry.

I've tried using graphic design pens for these, but I do not like the results. Take any ballpoint, especially the cheaper ones, and draw a line. You won't get a uniform deposit of ink. It is this characteristic of ballpoint pens that add extra 'texture' to the image.
